storing and packing safely

You're staring at the items to move and wondering how to keep them safe and sound while they are stored in your storage unit and the overwhelm starts to set in.  Listen, we get it and want to offer you a few tips to storing your items successfully.

Storage Boxes on a Pallet

Elevate the Floor

Your self-storage unit is similar to a garage door, so there is always a chance of dust, moisture or other undesirable condition creeping its way to the entrance of your self-storage unit if you have an exterior entrance.  With that said, we recommend laying a wooden pallet, plastic grate or crate on the bottom of your unit to elevate your belongings. Another option would be to leave a little space between your packed belongings and the entrance of your self-storage unit or in other words, pack to the back.

Pack in Plastic Totes

One way to prevent unwanted conditions, i.e. dust because we are in Sterling, CO and Northeastern Colorado where the wind tends to blow and blow, is to pack your items in plastic totes with lids.  For your favorite items this is a nonnegotiable!  Put like items together, so you can easily unpack or access the items you need and store them in the same size tote.  Using the same size of plastic totes make packing your self-storage unit super easy and efficient.

Top with Sheets

For your belongings that aren't able to fit in plastic totes, we recommend covering with a sheet or blanket to keep any dust or dirt from settling directly on your items.  You can thank the good ol' Sterling, Colorado wind again for this last step!

Snap a Photo & List Your Items (and their value) in Detail

Take a photo of how you left your unit for future reference.  Snap a photo and we highly encourage you to make a detailed list of the items you are storing and their value.  It may take a little bit more effort or time in the beginning, but in the unfortunate circumstance your unit is tampered with you're going to want this documentation and so are the police if you need to file any reports or take legal action.

Secure with a Disc Lock

You must provide your own lock, so don't forget to grab that and bring it with you. We recommend using a disc lock to secure your belongings in your unit.  You can purchase a lock at a local hardware store.
